At the center of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the gales across the single tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day upon day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

But, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.

Tales of predators prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found no beast.

The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village here only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of false alarms.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
